Self-drive documents
You need all three originals to receive the car
You must carry your home-country driver’s license, an International Driving Permit (IDP), and your passport at pickup.
- The original Korean driver’s license (copies and photos are not accepted)
- The original International Driving Permit (IDP); category B for passenger cars
- The original passport
Motorbikes
Motorbikes over 50cc need a category A license
For models over 50cc you must carry an International Driving Permit (category A) and your passport.
Category A is only issued if you hold the Korean class 2 small motorcycle (moped) license. For 50cc and under you need to check the local rules, and the available vehicles and insurance terms may be limited.
Deposit
The deposit is 3,000,000 VND and is returned when you hand the car back
- A deposit of 3,000,000 VND is paid when you pick up the car.
- It is refunded immediately at return if there is no damage or extra charge.
- If there is any speeding or traffic violation, it is refunded within up to 30 days.
If speeding or a traffic violation is found, it comes back within up to 30 days; with no violation you get it back on the spot at return.
When it is treated as a cancellation
Missing documents are treated the same as a no-show
- Missing driver’s license, passport, or International Driving Permit
- No-show (not arriving after the booked time)
In that case the rental fee is not refunded, whatever the timing of the cancellation. Putting the three originals in one envelope before you fly is the easiest way not to forget them.
Before you fly
What to prepare before departure, in order
- 1
Get an International Driving Permit
It is issued the same day at a Korean driver’s license examination office or the Korea Road Traffic Authority, but queues can mean a wait, so allow time before departure.
- 2
Check the vehicle category
Issued on a Korean class 1 or class 2 ordinary license, it usually shows category B only. Motorbikes over 50cc require category A.
- 3
Prepare a way to pay the deposit
You pay 3,000,000 VND at handover. Bring a card with enough limit, or cash.
