International Driving Permit for Vietnam: Complete 2026 Guide
Can you drive in Vietnam? Yes — but only with the right permit category. Covers cars, scooters, licence requirements, and what to do if your documents are missing.
Before you get behind the wheel
Short Answer: Yes, But the Category Matters
Vietnam recognises international driving permits (IDPs) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Since July 23, 2023, South Korea and Vietnam also have a bilateral recognition agreement in place. However, the IDP only covers the vehicle categories printed on the permit — driving a car requires Category B, while riding a motorbike or scooter over 50cc requires Category A.
Cars vs motorbikes vs scooters
Which IDP Category Do You Need?
| Vehicle | IDP Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Car, SUV, van (self-drive) | B | Carry IDP + home licence + passport |
| Motorbike or scooter over 50 cc | A | Most rental scooters in Vietnam are 110–160 cc |
| Scooter up to 50 cc | Check locally | Local rules vary; insurance coverage may be limited |
| Hired car with driver | Not required | Passenger only — no licence needed at all |
Most scooters available to rent in Vietnam — Honda Vision, Air Blade, PCX — have engines well above 50 cc. If you plan to ride one, you need Category A on your IDP. A standard car licence (Category B) alone does not cover motorbikes.

How to Get an International Driving Permit
| Country | Where to Apply | Processing Time | Cost (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Korea | Road Traffic Authority (한국도로교통공단), any driving licence office | Same day | ~8,500 KRW |
| Australia | NRMA, RACV, RAA or other motoring club | 2–5 business days | A$35–40 |
| United Kingdom | Post Office (in person) or RAC/AA online | 1–2 weeks by post; same day in person | ~£5.50 |
| United States | AAA branch in person | Same day | US$20 |
| Russia | MFC or GIBDD | 1 day | State fee ~1 600 ₽ |
IDPs are usually valid for 1–3 years but cannot be renewed — you apply for a new one. Check the expiry date before your trip. Note that an IDP is only valid alongside your original driving licence from the same country.
All three, always
Documents to Carry When Driving in Vietnam
- International Driving Permit — check category (A or B) and expiry date
- Original home-country driving licence — must match the IDP
- Passport — the name must match your IDP exactly
- Vehicle rental agreement — confirms insurance coverage, pick-up location, and return conditions
- Insurance certificate — know your excess and what is excluded
Vietnamese traffic police do conduct roadside checks, particularly on tourist routes. Keep physical copies of your documents or an offline photo — mobile data is not always available in rural areas.

No Permit? Hire a Driver Instead
If you do not have the right IDP category, do not want to deal with Vietnamese traffic, or are travelling with a family and would rather relax, hiring a car with a driver is the practical alternative. No paperwork, no fuel calculations, no parking stress.
- Airport pick-up: driver meets you at arrivals and takes you directly to your hotel
- Day trips: Dalat, Mui Ne, golf courses — driver knows the roads and waits for you
- Family travel: child seats, luggage space, no driving fatigue
- Night arrivals: safer than navigating an unfamiliar city after a long flight
자주 묻는 질문
Do I need an international driving permit to drive in Vietnam?+-
Yes. Vietnam requires an IDP issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, together with your original home-country driving licence and passport. Driving without one risks a fine and possible vehicle impoundment.
Can I ride a scooter in Vietnam with just a car licence?+-
No. Riding a scooter or motorbike over 50 cc requires IDP Category A, which covers motorcycles. A standard car licence (Category B) does not include motorbikes. Most rental scooters in Vietnam are 110–160 cc.
Is it safe to drive a scooter in Vietnam as a first-timer?+-
Vietnamese traffic is dense and follows different informal rules. Many first-timers find it stressful, particularly at intersections. If you are not an experienced rider, hiring a car with a driver or using Grab is a safer choice.
What happens if I drive in Vietnam without a valid IDP?+-
Fines vary, but driving without proper documentation can result in a fine of 1–3 million VND or vehicle impoundment. More importantly, your rental insurance may be void in the event of an accident.
Can I get an international driving permit in Vietnam?+-
No. IDPs must be obtained in your home country before you travel. They cannot be issued abroad.
